I am certified in Family-based therapy (FBT), the most empirically supported treatment for children and adolescents with eating disorders. FBT is a structured approach that centers the family as a critical force in the client’s recovery and does not blame the family as the source of the client’s eating disorder. Research has shown that eating disorders are highly complex and caused by interaction of biological, psychological and environmental forces.
FBT includes coaching parents to make food choices and supervise meals until their child/teen is healthy enough to return to age appropriate responsibilities with feeding themselves. FBT is also focused on supporting the client’s recovery at home as opposed to outside settings like residential treatment centers. FBT includes medical supervision with a client’s medical providers to ensure safety as the client works towards recovery.
